DEF Tank Solutions
What is a DEF tank?
A DEF tank is a storage tank for Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), which is used in modern diesel vehicles equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems.
DEF is a solution made of 32.5% high-purity urea and 67.5% deionized water. It’s injected into the exhaust stream of diesel engines to help reduce harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. When DEF is heated in the exhaust system, it breaks down into ammonia, which then reacts with NOx in the SCR catalyst to convert it into harmless nitrogen and water vapor.
The DEF tank is typically a separate reservoir in diesel vehicles (trucks, cars, farm equipment, etc.) that needs to be refilled periodically – usually every few thousand miles depending on the vehicle and driving conditions. Most vehicles will display warnings when the DEF level gets low, and some won’t start if the tank is completely empty, as this is required for emissions compliance.
DEF tanks are usually made of materials that won’t contaminate the fluid, such as specialized plastics, and they’re designed to prevent freezing in cold weather since DEF can freeze at around 12°F (-11°C).
